Mixing Patterns

Mixing patterns and colors is so much fun!
I know it's something I need to play with a bit more,
but my favorite patterns to mix is leopard print and plaid.
Where they are so drastically different it just works.

I think we could all mix it up a bit more with our patterns!
It's just about doing it in the right way
so you don't end up looking like you got dressed in the dark.

There's a few key tips that I go by when I do mix patterns and to make sure that my outfit makes sense!
I hope some of these things help you as well!

Pick patterns that aren't competing against one another

You want to make sure that the patterns aren't competing against each other to steal the spotlight of your outfit!
Otherwise you could end up looking like a hot mess and people will be like "Oh my Mary! What do that girl even got on, I don't even know where to look!"
(and if you know me at all you know I would say that quote in a Bayman accent)

You need a main pattern and an accent pattern.
The plaid scarf is the main pattern for this outfit and I used the leopard print boot be the accent pattern, so that they subtly compliment each other.

Break up the patterns

If you want to go for a less busy effect, you should have a good solid color to break up the patterns so that it's not too crazy on the eyes, such as the coat and turtleneck with this outfit- it helps to balance the weight of both patterns.
If you wanted to wear a pattern up top and bottom break your outfit up with a solid colored belt or jacket!

Balance.

You want to pair a large pattern with a small pattern.
Example: Small stripes with big floral or
Large stripes with tiny polka dots,

or with my current outfit, small plaid with big leopard print!
It's all about complimenting each other and finding prints on each end of the size scale.

Adding a pop of color

A little pop of color always goes a long way too to help break everything up.
I couldn't help but throw in some extra color with the teal bag with this outfit!
Love how it compliments the red and camel!
The outfit just ties itself together with that purse.
Such a great way to make a statement.

I wish I had bought this bag in every color when Aldo had it because it's so perfect.
It's the same shape as the Céline Luggage Tote, but about 70 time cheaper.
This exact style at Aldo is currently discontinued, but there are some others there this year that are still very similar!

Keep it interesting with Texture.

It's always great to use different textures in an outfit to keep it interesting and to give your outfit variety!
(That's why a full velour sweatsuit just isn't appealing. Well that and many MANY other reasons)
I brought the leopard print pony hair, the wool scarf and leather purse to this outfit which gives it so much more depth.
Even that little fur pom pom creates a more interesting look!
Sometimes texture is just what takes it to the next level!
Like complimenting leather and wool,
sequins and knit sweaters,
suede and chiffon,
etc.

Don't be matchy-matchy

You don't want to be too matchy-matchy!
It's very uninteresting!
You want to keep your outfit exciting and fun for the eyes by adding different types of colors, patterns and textures!
Thats essentially the bottom line here!
